What are the long term effects of Covid for some?

With all the positive news that we are hearing on an almost daily basis, perhaps the focus should now include those who have recovered from the initial infection and are now finding getting back to normal activity very difficult.

We in the clinic are hearing a number of different issues people are suffering from after contracting Covid.

Long covid symptoms

The most common and well known are symptoms similar to those experienced by people who have Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS) known also as myalgic encephalomyelitis (ME). CFS is different for every individual who contracts it.

ME was not generally well accepted when it first became prominent in the 1980s. The main symptom that is shared amongst all is the extreme tiredness that is not relieved by resting or sleeping.

But we have also heard of people suffering from long term loss of taste and smell, conversely hypersensitivity to smell to the point of extreme nausea, and the symptoms come in waves – sometimes daily sometimes spread throughout weeks. It’s estimated one in 10 exhibits symptoms for 12 weeks or longer.

This is described as Long Covid.

1 in 20 people suffer from long covid

We feel this is something that people should be aware of. You may know someone who is suffering in this way.

If so, then acupuncture may be an option for you.

If you would like to discuss anything about acupuncture then contact our acupuncturist Amanda Caspari at the Clinic, to find out more or read her article on long covid for more information.
