What is Craniosacral Therapy (CST)?
Craniosacral Therapy (CST) is a gentle, hands-on approach that uses light touch to support the body’s natural ability to settle, rebalance and recover. It focuses on the craniosacral system—tissues and fluid that surround and protect the brain and spinal cord—and aims to encourage ease and improved function throughout the body.

The term “craniosacral system” is commonly associated with the work of Dr John Upledger, who described a subtle rhythm he observed while assisting in spinal surgery and went on to develop a clinical approach around these observations.
A key principle in CST is working with your body rather than “doing something to” it. Many people find that when the nervous system feels safe and settled, the body can begin to let go of protective holding patterns. Because everything is connected, the area we work with isn’t always the exact spot where you feel symptoms—sometimes the most helpful place to start is somewhere else in the chain.
What happens during a Craniosacral Therapy treatment?
In CST, practitioners pay attention to the membranes (meninges) that support the brain and spinal cord, the bones and connective tissues they attach to, and the cerebrospinal fluid that cushions the central nervous system. When these tissues are under strain, some people experience tension patterns that can affect comfort and movement more widely.
During a session, the therapist uses a very light, still touch and carefully “listens” to areas of tension and ease in the body. Techniques are subtle—more like gently encouraging tissues to soften than trying to force a change. If helpful, the therapist may also work with fascial restrictions, supporting the body as it releases and reorganises in its own time.
What can Craniosacral Therapy help with?
Everyday stress, accidents, repetitive posture, and even long-standing patterns from earlier in life can contribute to tightness in the body’s connective tissues (fascia). CST aims to help the system find a calmer, more balanced state—often described by clients as feeling “lighter”, “more open”, or more at ease.
People often choose CST to support overall wellbeing and resilience, and to help with issues that may be linked to stress and tension patterns. It may be helpful alongside other care for:
- Feeling stressed, overwhelmed or “wired and tired”
- Tension and tightness in the neck, shoulders, back or jaw
- Head tension (including recurring tension patterns)
- Difficulty switching off, sleep challenges, or feeling run-down
- Support during recovery from physical strain (alongside appropriate medical advice)
- A desire for gentle, calming bodywork as part of a holistic self-care plan.
Please note: CST is not a substitute for medical diagnosis or treatment. If you have severe or persistent symptoms, new neurological symptoms, or you are concerned about your health, please seek advice from your GP or appropriate healthcare professional.
